Outreach

I am committed to science education & outreach, as well as playing an active role in improving the teaching, learning, and research environment around me. I firmly believe that participation in events to better our community and elevate diverse voices is an essential component of our role as science educators.

In the last couple of years, I have had the privilege of sharing the work of the talented students I learn with and the inspirational NC State University Libraries. Some examples include:

I am also indebted to all those mentors who helped me get here. I am therefore committed to being an active mentor for young scientists and have been involved with the American Society for Microbiology Committee on Minority EducationABRCMS, and SACNAS. Finally, decades of  truly memorable teachers, including my own mother, have made me keenly aware of the need to continuously improve my teaching skills by practicing as often as possible and keeping up-to-date with current technologies.  Most importantly, I cannot forget that I will always be learning, and should therefore keep an open mind and a patient and humble demeanor.
