Tonight I started watching the KBase Educators Orientation meeting from December 2024. Ellen Dow facilitated the session and shared resources from the KBase Educators group and handbook. Dow explained the structure of KBase narratives and how to join the KBase Educators group. The Educators Org has several narratives that can be copied. There are a couple of ways to get to narratives. The example shown was the Module 1: Genome Assembly that we will use in BIT 295 this spring. The KBase Educators Concept Overview narrative provides connections to numerous resources. Dow opened the genomics narrative by searching genome within the Educators Org. The Genome Module Part 1: Assembly narrative has markdown cells with information about the tools and several pre-run apps. There is an orange triangle icon that indicates that the app has been updated since it was run. I didn’t know this and will pay attention to this notification and re-run apps now! In this narrative, data import, trimming, and assemblies were described and performed with different apps. Eileen Hotze asked about sharing view only pre-run narratives with students. Runs can be reset and the parameters are saved. Dow suggested making the class an Org and sharing narratives. The modules are linked by part/process and have critical thinking questions. I will continue watching this session tomorrow to prepare for how to share narratives and information with co-instructors and students.
