Leveraging AI for Effective Course Design

I continued watching the Quality Matters (QM) lightning talks session. The session focused on AI for course design. The first group of speakers included: Kate Morgan, Lisa Byrnes, Amanda Hardman, Heather Braatz, Bryan Malone, and Jess Kahlow. The first session with Dr. Rachel Brooks was on the use of AI to expand branching scenarios for medical assisting. For this online medical assisting course restructure, the course designers and subject matter experts had a tight timeline and used AI. The group explored AI tools like Learnt.ai and ended up using ChatGPT. They began with a prompt based on Antonio Bowen’s Teaching with AI book. They iterated, revised with SMEs, and improved the design. The loop was necessary to improve the draft and create a scenario. The scenarios they created were for medical assistants and not detailed clinical scenarios. The team reflected about the process, concluding that it was a productive use of AI. They are now piloting the branching scenarios with students to obtain learner feedback. The next speaker was Heather Braatz who presented on Rapid Content Conversion with AI Tools. Braatz and team have been using Articulate Rise AI tools to convert lists into interactive content, for example. Braatz spoke about using AI to change the tone, generate knowledge checks, and quickly improve resources. Articulate AI is expensive, with yearly subscriptions close to $1,700! However, the examples provided by Braatz shared how with five learning objectives the platform created content and knowledge checks! I am amazed by what Articulate AI can do and will look into it!
