Maximize Efficiency: AI Strategies from QM Connect 2024

Tonight I continued watching the QM Connect 2024 Conference AI Lightning Sessions. The next session was “A Team Approach: Getting started with AI to build efficiencies.” Lisa Byrnes and Kate Morgan from Penn State Wold Campus were the presenters. They are both instructional designers interested in AI and wanted to streamline processes. They established a working group with the goal of identifying and streamlining time-consuming tasks. Their work included use of ChatGPT and CoPilot. Their campus has CoPilot access and they paid for ChatGPT. Their five-person team was a safe space to test and share what they learned. The two hour sessions produced various tools. For example, the Time Stamp Remover, the Scenario Crafter, Code Extractor, Personalized Grammar Tutor, Table Formatter, and The Diplomatic Designer were several GPTs they created. As Byrnes and Morgan reflected, they emphasized the importance of working as a group and learn. They want to expand upon AI integration. They did note that human supervision is needed. The working groups will continue, and I want to learn what they do next!

The next speakers were Ricardo Lumbreras Jr. and Geetanjali Soni. Lumbreras teaches at Tarleton State University and works with teachers and graduate students. The title of the session was “Ready for a PROMPT?” Lumbreras wants to help students gain workforce skills. Lumbreras shared a question: how should I think of AI? Lumbreras listed as a thought partner, a feedback generator, a learner, a potential tutor, a coach, but not as a task completer. Lumbreras shared several examples of AI-assisted lessons and assessments. The prompt formula shared was: role, action, checkpoint, task, and then refine. This session had several anecdotes and examples of how Lumbreras uses AI to help create resources for and support future teachers.
