Using AI for Effective Instructional Design

The next QM Connect 2024 Conference AI Lightning talk I watched was by Carolyn Stoll and Krista Galyen. The title of the session was “Why Grade Using AI.” Stoll shared how they use AI for rich, robust, feedback. Stoll teaches a writing course in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Cincinnati. Stoll is using ChatGPT (the paid version) and uses the safe settings and no student identifying information. Stoll tells students about the use of AI for feedback and participants can opt out. Monitoring and auditing the tool is critical, Stoll emphasized. Style assignments and paraphrasing work well with this AI system. Stoll stressed that providing details about the assignment in the prompt. The AI provides feedback about paraphrasing sources and generates an example revision. Stoll concluded that if you choose the right assignment and refine the prompts/use, ChatGPT can provide rich feedback to free up time for you to have one-on-one meetings. Stoll stressed: monitor the output, edit the feedback, and provide feedback for training. Stoll mentioned that the AI results do drift after several assignments. Stoll retrains the AI and continues to wonder about this phenomenon. I do too!

The enxt session was by Krista Galyen from iDesign. The title was “Ethical and Efficient Use of Instructional Design with AI through Structured Flexibility Model.” Galyen is an instructional designer and works with partners to create educational experiences. Galyen and colleagues designed a Structured Flexibility tool for program design. The dynamic AI from the Build app, help with repetitive tasks: Learning objectives are aligned, for example. The app helps you maintain program-level consistency while sharing control with the instructional designers. Reusable Design Objects (RDOs) adapt to program goals and allow for efficiency. Galyen concluded with an invitation to learn more about iDesign. I went to the webpage and found their services and will continue to search for information about their design tools.
