Steps to Effective Thematic Analysis for Researchers

Tonight I watched the Delve video on thematic analysis. They defined thematic analysis as a process that involves delving through a data set, identifying patterns, systematically coding, deriving themes, and creating a narrative.” The Delve video focused on the thematic analysis approach proposed by Braun and Clarke. The first step is to familiarize yourself with your data by transcribing and reading the transcripts. Take notes and think about the codes you want to create. The second step is to create initial codes that represent the patterns and meaning of your transcripts. Step three is to decide what to code and add new codes. Step four is to collate codes with supporting data to gain an understanding. Step five is to group the codes into themes that “say something meaningful about your research question.” Step six is to evaluate and revise! The last step is to write the narrative that includes themes and quotes to tell the story of your data. The narrative should include your own analysis. The video tutorial using Delve software was useful to appreciate the process of coding.
