The keynote for MAXDAYS 2025 day 2 was by John W. Creswell. The title of the session was “Update: Trends in Mixed Methods Research, 2025.” Creswell has written numerous books on mixed methods research. Creswell lives in Japan eight months a year! They have been doing mixed methods research for four decades. In 2023, they published the seventh edition on educational research. The Mixed Methods Research book emphasizes the key concepts and is meant to be a quick introduction. I will search for an ebook version! Creswell provided examples of closed ended and open ended questions. Creswell has a simple six-step model:
- Step 1: Study a mixed method problem
- Step 2: Collect qualitative and quantitative data (data inventory)
- Step 3: Select a mixed methods design
- Step 4: Integrate the data within the design
- Step 5: Analyze integration in joint display table
- Step 6: Draw insight or metainferences from the joint display analysis.
There are several options for mixed methods design, explained Creswell. They spoke about the integration of mixed methods: merging, connecting/explaining, building, and embedding. Creswell shared thoughts on current and future trends in mixed methods research.
