Professor Sharon Lauricella from Ontario Tech University presented at Open Ed 2021 a session entitled ” Mote for Personalized Voice Notes: Connection, Feedback, and Accessibility via Edtech.” Mote is an educational technology tool. Lauricella is a professor in communication and digital media studies. I didn’t know what Mote was! It is a tool that allows you to leave voice comments and can be used with the Google Suite. I wonder if we can use it!? Lauricella mentioned it works in Gmail and Google Docs! Lauricella mentioned that this tool is important because feedback is needed to help students learn. Lauricella explained that capturing voice is really powerful. When a student receives a mote, it looks like a comment. Students in Lauricella’s courses work on GoogleDocs and receive comments… and a “mote”! Students can listen and read the motes. This is important because it is accessible to more people. Interestingly, Lauricella mentioned that when students receive text comments they may interpret the feedback differently than when using voice/audio. Lauricella demonstrated how simple it is to activate the extension and leave motes. Another feature is recording Motes to a notepad that can be “recycled” and shared with multiple people. While Lauricella talked about using this feature in large classes, I can envision using this for a “feedback cookbook.” The transcriptions can be edited. I wonder how accurate the system is? Now I am going to try Mote…
