Reflecting on Feedback

Feedback to improve and move forward.

Yesterday I listened to a couple of Lilly Conference sessions on assessment. They all emphasized providing timely feedback and opportunity for growth. Initial drafts were evaluated on completion with extensive feedback and more developed projects were assessed based on a rubric. Multiple-choice questions in the learning management system offer the opportunity for instant feedback that can encourage learning of the concept or process without giving away the correct answer. Video or audio feedback promotes communication and in some cases makes you more accessible. This all made me think about how we miss a chance to provide feedback for future growth in online quizzes and how grading drafts on effort can help build confidence and skill. After all, feedback should actually feed forward and help the development of mastery. I too often spend time on feedback for final projects in which students gave no chance to revise. How can I change this?
