Incorporating the Virtual Tools into the In-Person Courses

The Microbrew from ASMCUE 2022 that I watched tonight was titled “When Plan B Becomes Plan A; Incorporating Content Created Virtually into In-person Classes.” Heather Townsend and Sarah Shoemaker were the presenters. They both have decades of experience teaching and wanted to reflect on how to use content created during “the virtual year” and incorporated into their courses. Shoemaker spoke about keeping virtual pre-lab activities allowed them to maximize their in-person lab time. Shoemaker used a traffic light system for working from home to reduce distractions: red light for do not interrupt, yellow for interrupt and proceed with caution, and green for ok to interrupt. Townsend used discussion boards and videos to prepare for in-person activities. Townsend also had students draw and then use the microscope. During the question and answer session, a participant asked about how Townsend promotes productive discussions. Townsend uses a ten-point rubric with seven points for posting and three points for replying. Shoemaker responded to a comment about videos by explaining how they coach students to use their time and digital content appropriately. Both presenters shared several tips and resources in a conversational way. I love working with Heather and learn cool strategies and activities every time she shares!
