Tonight I watched the Alternative Assessment Institute 2022 session entitled “Revisiting the Authentic Assessment Framework a Decade after it as Created to Measure the Authenticity of Contemporary Assessment Tasks” presented by Kelley Burton. They are from the University of the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia. Burton published “A Framework for Determining the Authenticity of Assessment Tasks: Applied to an Example in Law” in 2011. They did a literature review and developed a set of questions. Burton shared some of the topics of activities and assessments they developed such as scenarios, reflective journaling after visiting a court session, and several others. I thought the problem-based exams and how Burton has adapted them in the last decade were useful examples that can be adapted to molecular biology. Burton spoke about updating project descriptions and seeking feedback. Burton reflected that the category collaboration is one they are workin on. One prompt in the framework I liked was: “Does the assessment produce novel…” collaboration or products. The spreadsheet calculates a rating based on the user’s responses..I had not come across a spreadsheet and self-assessment resource like this one! This could be a good way to evaluate and improve the guidelines for the BIT 295 assignments and share for feedback.
