Steve Kaufman, Senior Instructional Designer & Strategic Initiatives Coordinator, presented at the QM Quality in Action Conference 2025. This was their second or follow up session titled “The AI Empowered Instructional Designer 2.0.” They shared resources at bit.ly/ai-empowered-id Kaufman asked participants about their feelings on AI and whether the their institutions have policies on AI use by students and/of faculty and staff. Kaufman acknowledged that the state of AI changes rapidly, causing overwhelm Topics being discussed, according to Kaufman, include agentic AI, AI transparency, consideration of regulations, AI literacy, and explosion of synthetic media. Kaufman shared the title of an article: “The End of Search, The Beginning of Research” to emphasize that factchecking is becoming essential. AI Deep Research now can autonomously search for a topic you propose. I tried it on Gemini to learn about Delftia spp. The results were impressive! Fifteen pages! Kaufman continued by sharing AI generated videos. Kaufman also used alt text generation tools. With the upcoming accessibility goals in April 2026, tools like Arizona’s alt text generator for graphs/images can help increase access. Khanmigo is a language model incorporated for student use. Khanmigo will not tell you the answer; Khanmigo will help tutor you! Lumi is the D2L version of a tool that integrates AI into the learning management system (LMS). Kaufman mentioned that H5P was purchased by D2L! Oh! Kaufman noted that the expectation is to keep H5P open… I hope so! Kaufman used image generation and Hume AI to create characters and give them voices! Kaufman generates short sound clips for scenarios. Kaufman shared ideas for integrating AI into curriculum:

  • AI debate comparing different models, for example
  • AI peer review to analyze student writing
  • Comparison of models
  • Tutoring
  • Dialogues

Kaufman had so many examples and ideas! It was a fast-paced packed session that gave me many ideas! During the question session, Kaufman spoke about using a Hypothes.is integration that uses AI to assist with writing. I’ll have to check it out!
