AI in Online Learning: Enhancing Engagement and Inclusivity

Tonight I watched Siobahn Day Grady, Director of the Institute for Artificial Intelligence & Equity Research at North Carolina Central University and Racheal Brooks, Director of Quality Assurance Implementation Solutions at Quality Matters present at the QM Research Online Conference. The session title was “Beyond Automation: Using AI to Create Engaging, Aligned, and Inclusive Online Courses.” Day Grady began by asking what excites us about AI in the next five years? Day Grade spoke about the current state of diversity in AI presenting statistics on the lack of diversity. They spoke about AI needing diversity to mitigate bias. Day Grady is a computer scientist and national STEM role model. The Institute for Artificial Intelligence & Equity Research was funded by Google.org. It is the first of its kind and through the Office of the Provost. Students will be directly impacted through partnerships with industry leaders and workforce development. The Institute is providing courses, outreach activities, and guidance. Dr. Brooks then spoke about leveraging AI for engagement. Brooks listed tools such as ChatGPT and Wooclap to promote student engagement. Socratic by Google provides AI-powered explanations for a wide range of subjects and supports real-time support for learners. Knewton Alta is an adaptive learning platform that personalizes support. Brooks explained that Mentimeter provides AI-enhanced polling and quiz features and Duolingo (AI-driven version) uses AI to adapt language learning progress and gamification. H5P now enables AI-supported video creation. Packback was also mentioned to support student engagement. For curriculum development, AI can help support alignment. Brooks mentioned Coursetune that is an AI-assisted curriculum mapping and visualization tool. Sana Labs personalizes learning paths at an institutional level! Brooks emphasized that we need to balance AI assistance with faculty expertise. Inspera assessment is a tool to create assessments. To enhance accessibility using AI, Microsoft Azure Cognitive Services and EquatIO are two examples. Diversity.AI can be used to identify biases in text and media! Textio provides writing assistance to reduce unconscious bias… and suggests alternatives! So many tools were shared!
