Tonight I watched “Humanized, Empathetic and Engaging Learning – Creating a Purposeful Learning Framework” from the Quality in Action Quality Matters (QM) conference in April. The presenter, Brett Christie, was from O’Donnell Learn and had a full career with the Cal State System. They explained how there is a “need for humanized, inclusive, engaged, learning experiences.” They also shared data from Ohio State University comparing August 2020 and April 2021 student responses highlighting increased burnout and negative behaviors. They also shared data from a 2021 student survey addressing the question: why students don’t turn on their cameras. The speaker shared thoughts about the “butts in seats” mentality and learning how to shift how we may design, deliver, and engage by putting “Maslow before Bloom’s.”They also recommended “humanize early and often.’ For this, the course welcome helps communicate your passion and can be a Flipgrid, a personal statement, or a welcome video. The speaker explained that the tone of the syllabus can help streamline and to create an environment in which we all learn from each other. They also spoke about equality, equity, and inclusion in online environments. I thought several of the studies referenced were useful and recent, and I appreciate the summary.
