Connecting Science and the Public with Concept Mapping

It has been a long day! I’m on my way to an ASK BIO workshop in Denver. While waiting for the train I watched another ASMCUE microbrew by a former UNC SPIRE fellow now at Appalachian State. The title was Science in the News Activity for Introductory Majors. The activity is structured and repeated several times a semester. Students read and annotate primary literature. They discuss with peers major findings and then use Jamboard to concept map. The demo Rachel Bleich did was simple: ten key words from topics from the course are chosen and connected with liking terms. Bleich has done this activity with 125 student courses from numerous majors! How cool! They also spoke about how they selected articles of interest such as plastic-degrading microbes and went from primary literature to concept maps and summaries for a broad audience. I thought the Jamboard instructions were great! Ok, I made it to the hotel!
