Digital Storytelling

Book with stories on cover

I want to try Digital Storytelling activity suggestions from the K. Patricia Cross Academy: https://kpcrossacademy.org/techniques/digital-story/ While I have used video tutorials and multimedia assignments, I haven’t intentionally incorporated the individual connections mentioned in the activity description and resources. There are numerous suggestions including a step-by-step guide, example rubrics and assessment, and tips for online implementation. The more I think about this assignment, the more relevance I find for the course goals of the Yeast Metabolic Engineering and Biotechnology and Sustainability courses we are developing. Students could develop and share short stories to connect local and regional research into biotechnology and sustainability. Students can focus on understanding the methods and applications and comparing them to the examples discussed in the course. The rubrics provided are fantastic foundations that we can adapt to our course and learning objectives. One challenge would be to provide feedback and peer review and sharing opportunities within the eight week module timeframe. I still think this type of assignment addresses several important skills and provides students with the opportunity to create a resource that can be used beyond the course. How can this activity be used to promote meaningful creation and lasting relevant learning?

Incorporating digital storytelling into a course requires thinking about course goals, learning objectives, student engagement, and how to appropriately share student resources. Image credit: WordPress free images.
