OER in a Composition Course

Sabrina Jones is a Term Instructor at Marshall University and has been using student-created OER projects. The Open Ed 2021 session they presented was entitled “Using OER in the Composition Classroom to Empower First-Generation Students” and was a ten-minute recording. They shared their resources to support students and their work with TRIO. They converted their composition courses to use OER only. Jones used the textbook EmpoWord. Jones explained that the author updates the resource frequently. Jones has remixed the textbook and also used OER activities and games. Jones uses Quizizz.com and Rusnak Creative. In addition, Jones shared several activities and grames: Breakout Fun, Audacity, and Hypothes.is were listed. Jones uses and creates materials with students and also works to make the use of Hypothes.is and other tools interactive. Jones uses reflection to capture student ideas. Students surveyed spoke honestly about the materials. Jones explained the use of Hypothes.is and OER to support, challenge, and learn with participants.
