Tonight I watched Carolee Clyne and Surita Jhangiani present at the CAST UDL Symposium on “Open Pedagogy and UDL: The Next Steps.” Drs. Jhangiani and Clyne have decades of experience working with instructors on UDL at UBC Vancouver Point Grey Campus. They began by explaining what are open educational resources as “teaching, learning and research materials in any medium – digital or otherwise – that reside in the public domain…” OER use open copyright licenses like Creative Commons. They shared a slide with open and free + freedom. The five Rs are:
- Reuse
- Revise
- Remix
- Retain
- Redistribute
They defined open pedagogy as “harnessing the power of open in teaching and learning practices.” Resources shared included Wikipedia, Hypothes.is, and several others. UDL progresses learner development to support open pedagogy by promoting access, building, and internalization of the topic they learn about and share. This short presentation (15 min) reminded me about the 5Rs and how I still have to find ways to achieve a couple more!
