The Delve YouTube video I watched tonight was on “Deriving Themes from Qualitative Data.” In this seven minute session, they demonstrated reviewing codes and organizing them under themes. While the themes may seem like simply another code, they should connect related codes to help summarize emerging themes. Adding descriptions to the themes helps organize them and refine the organization of codes. The video noted that you start with a “flat” list of codes, organizing codes helps the researcher interpret the coding to identify relationships and consequences of phenomena. In the example, the researcher organized codes related to “anxiety.” The researcher can modify descriptions to help, for example. In the video, the Delve Tool allows users to manage lists of codes. From the codes, the theme of staying connected did appear. Once grouped, categories can be organized. This organization can make the necessary connections for a deeper analysis of the qualitative data.
