Understanding In Vivo Coding: Techniques and Examples

Tonight I watched another Delve video. This five-minute video is titled “How to do In Vivo Coding Using Delve.” I appreciate how this YouTube channel and videos have information on types of coding and approaches! So far, the videos I have watched provide basics on qualitative research and, while they use the Delve tool, all methods can be adapted to other tools. In vivo coding was described as helpful in the early phases of analysis when you are still deciding on codes. The video described in vivo coding as deriving codes from the data itself. In the example, the user reads a passage in a transcript and uses part of the text “feels overwhelming” as the code. The code may include several sentences yet the code name is just a couple of words from the passage selected. In a third example, they highlighted several sentences and used “overwhelmed” as the code because it was the sentiment expressed by the participant. In vivo coding was described as a “first cycle” coding approach where the code uses the participant’s words as the code name. Once you make a new code, you want to apply it to other segments/transcripts. These short videos are really useful and I watch several times to learn the concepts and techniques!
