Tonight I watched Michael Gizzi present an advance webinar on “Creating Literature Reviews with AI-Assist.” This session was recorded on April 17, 2025. AI Assist, Gizzi noted, can be a powerful companion. Gizzi shared the question:
What are our goals with building a literature review?
– Identifying different methods
– Identifying research questions
– Capturing key findings
– Looking for limitations
MAXQDA can help with paraphrasing tools and coding segments. Paraphrasing for literature reviews was the first tool Gizzi explored. The Paraphrase tool is under the Analysis menu. You can export and save paraphrases. The right sidebar can be expanded to show memos, comments, and paraphrases. Gizzi mentioned that code comments are useful to summarize why codes are important. Code comments are similar to Paraphrases. Both appear on the right sidebar. A user can select text, right click, and request AI paraphrasing. Paraphrase mode allows a user to select text and it automatically suggests creating a paraphrase. From the paraphrase window, you can select the AI Assist tool. You can paraphrase in several languages with AI Assist. Categorize Paraphrases is a tool to browse and create codes, for example. The Paraphrase Matrix tool allows comparison of paraphrases from documents. The matrix is interactive and brings you to the text. You can also print a document with paraphrases or the paraphrase matrix. You can also write paraphrases for images. Gizzi noted that you can copy and paste paraphrase matrix results into memos. Gizzi demonstrated AI Assist tools including summaries and chatting with documents. The chat and links are saved. Some of the chat questions were: “how does the author define leadership?” Gizzi also shared a project on active learning in STEM. In one example, chatting with a single document only uses information from that text. Gizzi takes the information, codes it, and creates a summary grid. Tailwind released availability to chat with multiple documents. At the end of the webinar, there was a discussion of how to cite AI help. This webinar gave me ideas for our literature review.
