Padlet and Flipgrid Uses in Different Disciplines

Drs. Maria Ortiz and Annette Redmon from the University of Cincinnati presented how they use Padlet and Flipgrid in their courses. Their 2020 recorded Lilly Conference session provided near examples of uses in different disciplines. Redmon uses Vengage and Padlet to have students create and share infographics. The free version of Vengage allows users to make infographics. Students then present and share their creations on a Padlet board. Another assignment was for students to create an LLC and drawings and share them on Padlet. Ortiz uses Flipgrid in language education. They described online learning and discussion board fatigue. Ortiz uses Flipgrid to give a twist to discussions with a video element. Flipgrid allows for captioning and has an immersive reader. Ortiz teaches Spanish at different levels. Flipgrid provides a way for Ortiz to have students do video journaling and have interactive conversations. A detailed rubric that shows what is expected of students is used to assess video posts. I didn’t know Flipgrid provides the option for students to have the camera off if desired! As mentioned in the presentation, this makes it useful and accessible for more students. Ortiz also mentioned video moderation options that can be used for feedback before making the post public. Several strategies for building community using Flipgrid were mentioned as well as the metrics it provides, including hours of engagement. We are all using different tools and strategies for community building and peer review. I particularly like the Padlet Infographic and company/LLC gallery for feedback! We may try that! For our graphical abstracts, this could be an excellent way for everyone to see the variety of topics and approaches. I have tried unsuccessfully to use the video feature for discussion posts within our LMS: students have not tried it. Could Flipgrid change this?
