How to Use MAXMaps for Effective Concept Mapping

Tamara Pataki from MAXQDA presented at MAXDAYS 2025. The title of the session was “Exploring MAXMaps: Creating Concept Maps.” Pataki noted that you can create free maps or pre-built models. I have been curious about the pre-built templates/models! You can import elements including geographical information, noted Pataki. When creating free maps, users can emphasize connections with arrows and change their width, for example. You can click on elements of a map and navigate to different elements. MAXMaps has a panel on the left with the maps and a canvas on the right. Pataki demonstrated how to upload images, format and align text, and include other elements. Next, Pataki shared how a simple case model template can be used. MAXQDA will import automatically the ten most frequent codes and create a concept map using the single-case model. The number of codes, labels, and connection “strength” can be adjusted. Adjustments to code definitions in MAXMaps are reflected in MAXQDA. A two case model, Pataki explained, can be used to compare two interview partners. The Code Theory Model presents a hierarchical organization of the codes and subcodes. Pataki also demonstrated the flexibility of creative coding. Pataki showed how for some analyses, code relations can be examined. You can also create maps for focus groups and highlight one speaker. You can also export maps to the QTT worksheet.
