Sewing and OER? That was the name of the Open Ed 2021 session that we watched tonight. Presented by Heather Clark, faculty at the Wilson School of Design at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, and Catherine Hay, this ten-minute session shared several resources. They teach fashion and talked about their project “stitched.” The presentation used a nice cursive font. Hay talked about the limited OER in their field. Stitched addressed this through an open and online format with written instructions, photos, and videos that can be updated. They developed the OER using WordPress and used heading to organize the content. Clark mentioned they focused on the process and planned carefully. They obtained an OER grant through KPU. They also included students in the process. Their demo of the stitched resource highlighted how simple their layout is and the topics they addressed. Students shared content and edited. The pages include rich content: images, video, diagrams! An overall goal is to create a resource that “supplements and adds.” They continue to incorporate resources and update existing content. The Stitched OER is a beautiful example of content and time well-spent planning the design to broaden participation and plan for updates.
