Tonight I watched the Open Ed 2021 session entitled “Moving Forward on OER: Building a Culture of Open Through the Creation of a Cross Campus OER Team” presented by Michelle Brailey, Sarah Shaughnessy, and Lauren Stieglitz from the University of Alberta Library. They all have different roles and have come together to support open education on their campus. The University of Alberta has multiple campuses including a French-language campus! They have 40,000 enrollment, according to Brailey. The Libraries support OER Publishing with Pressbooks for several campuses in Alberta! Shaughnessy discussed the mandate of the Open Education Team and its membership. They wanted to increase and sustain their collaborative open education initiatives. In order to support new Pressbooks users, they have drop-in hours. Stieglitz described the ideas and goals for increasing student engagement. Stieglitz described how they are approaching sharing information. They shared some recommendations for where to start to identify stakeholders and reduce stakeholder costs. They have searched courses to look for textbook replacements and continue informing faculty. Brailey concluded by sharing challenges and opportunities to expand work from reactionary to proactive. Brailey defined proactive by mentioning that they look forward to bringing in partners in meaningful ways.
