Assessing Student Learning with a New Receptor-Ligand Activity

Tonight I watched the ASMCUE 2022 recorded session entitled “ImmunoReach: At the Intersection of Biochemistry & Immunology.” Heather A. Bruns and Sharifa Love-Rutledge presented this ten-minute recorded session. They both created this activity and implemented it at the University of Alabama Huntsville and UAB, with class sizes 13 and 31, respectively. They designed this receptor-ligand interactions activity to emphasize the biological importance of receptor/ligands and interdisciplinary nature science. Learners also developed communication skills with an infographic. Prior to class, students watched a video and completed a worksheet. In class, they worked in groups to complete the worksheet and start the presentation they would then present in groups during the following session. Exam questions performance was recorded on questions related to the activity. Multiple-choice questions were analyzed as well as student perceptions on a post-survey. One of the survey aspects was perception of the activity effectiveness using six items. This recorded session had several examples of really useful and powerful multiple-choice questiosn that can be adapted for other topics. I also appreciate the teamwork component of the lesson!
