Common MAXQDA Questions Answered in MAXDAYS 2025 Session

I continue to watch MAXDAYS 2025 recordings. Today I watched a shorter live Q&A session moderated by the MAXQDA team’s Tamara Pataki. I was curious what questions participants would ask and could use resources to help with using MAXQDA for some of the analyses I am planning. This session was open and attendees asked questions that may not have been addressed during sessions. The MAXQDA experts responded to a variety of questions. This was a very small session with only five participants, and several were already certified MAXQDA Trainers. A few frequently asked questions across different sessions were collected. People asked questions about the AI features and focus groups.

Pataki noted that coding is categorizing qualitative data. Manual coding can be done by highlighting and right-clicking to create a new code. This is an inductive way of creating codes. Auto-coding can be performed through searches. The identified segments using search terms can be coded. Pataki demonstrated searches. For example, “friend*” will search for variations starting with the string “friend.” Automatically created codes are identified by MAXQDA. Codes created by auto-coding can be resized, merged, and removed. The Dictionary feature defines categories containing different search terms. Code memos can define the code and used to define prompts for AI Assist. AI coded segments are colored with a purple gradient and justification. Another question was about student licenses: student licenses are extended for courses and dissertation work!
