Surita Jhangiani, Carolee Clyne, Sharmila Miller & Erica Hamilton presented at the CAST UDL Symposium the session on “Open Pedagogy and UDL: Student Experiences.” The panelists all have teaching experience with different learners. Dr. Jhangiani began by explaining how open pedagogy and UDL can work together to enhance student experiences. The presenters acknowledged the people whose lands they live on. They are all in the BC area in Canada. Jhangiani explained the connection between open pedagogy and UDL. They provided several examples, including Wikipedia, Hypothes.is annotation of articles, and websites. Clyne talked about the creation of knowledge with learners to build confidence and self-value. Clyne asked: “why does learning have to be competitive?” Hamilton spoke about how open pedagogy in the classroom created “more doors and excitement than fear and panic. ” Miller spoke from the perspective of a learner having the ability to engage in the creation. Hamilton spoke about sharing their indigenous background and traditional history to share. While the breakout rooms were not recorde, the introductions and initial remarks are full of insights from the perspectives of learners and educators. Clyne summarized the discussions in their room by mentioning that open pedagogy goes beyond non-disposable assignments. Miller said that growth and learning is a beautiful journey, and listening & encouraging students is what is needed. One question that came up was how to request and share with permission. Jhangiani talked about the open licensing system and Creative Commons. They also highlighted the importance of working with students and sharing. Miller shared the rich examples that were discussed in their breakout room from several disciplines. Another question was what platform is used. The panelists spoke about BC Campus using PressBooks.
