Video Case Analyses & Collaborative Oral Discussions

Drs. Ashley Whitehead and Mina Min from Appalachian State University presented at the 2020 Lilly Conference online on “Videocase Analysis For Preservice Teachers’ Growth As Culturally Responsive Teachers.” They introduced a video case analysis assignment for their preservice learning teachers course. The session goals focused on how to use video case analysis to support preservice teachers. They had specific knowledge and skills they wanted their learners to gain. I thought it was interesting and important they they had goals for their students to notice and list ways to support the learners in their classrooms. Min described the use of a framework by Lucas and Ana Villegas 2011 for preparing linguistically responsive teaching. Min and Whitehead used the Atlas video case study resource to filter and select cases of math classrooms. Groups of four or five students were assigned three video cases for analysis. Fifteen minute videos include comments and reflections by the teachers in a format similar to Hypothes.is. Students can also annotate and discuss the videos. I wonder if at NC State we can access Atlas videos? Min explained that after independently watching the videos and annotating with Atlas students engaged in collaborative oral discussions and reflections. Min mentioned research on the value of this collaborative approach to learn from each other and the different thought processes. Min played a video of Appalachian State Students discussing a video case study and instructor moves. Students focused on culturally responsive teaching strategies and highlighted examples. I wonder if we could do something similar with cases on Gala? Students in the video discussed the case study with some prompts that were provided. I was intrigued by how this can be used for students to dissect molecular techniques too. Maybe we could use a similar approach for discussions of Jove.com articles about key technologies/techniques. I also enjoyed how the students in the video had so much to say about best practices of culturally responsive teaching! We can learn a lot from preservice teacher education!

How do you teach preservice teachers about culturally responsive teaching practices? Min and Whitehead use video case studies and collaborative oral discussions to engage their students in careful analysis and reflection on effective culturally responsive teaching strategies.
