I finished Karen Costa’s book entitled “99 Tips for Creating Simple and Sustainable Videos” today and want to reflect on what I learned. I think the main message is to simplify and don’t fall into the trap of perfectionism. Instructional videos should focus on communicating in a way that is clear, honest, and engaging. The last section has several exercises to get used to being on video and making mistakes. I want to do these and practice as we prepare for the spring semester. I’ll start with a welcome video and will watch Costa’s advice in this last short tip before hitting record. This message made me think about the purpose of the videos we create. I’ll try several of the tips and exercises, modulate my voice and show my energy, and aim for conciseness and clarity while being honest and human. This book was an easy read and very timely. The book also has several video tips available on Karen Costa’s YouTube channel. Take a look and appreciate the simplicity and power of a clear non-hyper produced message!
